On Wednesday, Year 9 pupils attended a workshop led by Claire Harvey, a Paralympian volleyball player, and Emma Miller-McCaffrey. The workshop started by discussing what bias and self-awareness are and how people can be prejudiced about other people based on what they can see or hear about them. Pupils then discussed how we form our opinion of others, being included or excluded from a friendship group and how this feels. The workshop finished with pupils writing down ideas about how they can be more accepting and inclusive of people’s differences.
Following the workshop, Claire ran a ‘seated volleyball’ session for pupils and staff. After some rigorous training (and a few bruises from stray balls) we formed into two teams and played a game. It was a great deal of fun but it will be a long time before any of us will be up to Olympic standard! Well done to the pupils’ who won 25-18.
