On Thursday 8th March (International Women’s Day) Year 9 went to Andover College for a fantastic event to enable Year 9 pupils to become aware of the vast range of fantastic opportunities available to them within the digital industries world of work. In the lecture theatre pupils were bombarded by a series of high speed presentations from female ambassadors working within the industries – real people with a passion and enthusiasm for their particular profession, including web design, neuroscientist, Microsoft technology solutions, programming and blogging. It was great to hear not just about how varied and interesting their work was but also the paths they had followed in order to arrive at their particular industry. There was a significant emphasis on the recruitment difficulties being faced by this industry and therefore the career opportunities available for young people – no wonder the industry pays on average 35% above national average salaries.
The lectures were followed by an interactive technology fair, just right to give the pupils some hands-on opportunities and show them what is going on in the digital world.
This event must have taken the organisers at Andover college a great deal of time to set up and we are very grateful for the opportunity and experience offered to our Year 9 pupils.
We do hope they are motivated and inspired by this opportunity.
